I had an unconventional upbringing as a mixed-race child of the '60s, fostered by Doctor Barnardo in an all-English Christian setting.
In the 1970s, I was relocated into the Ghanaian community and, later in my teenage years, into the Jamaican Community. None of these communities respected each other. Community tensions and clashes were an everyday feature, occasionally erupting into riots.
As a young adult, I searched for my identity and a sense of family and place. As a result, I adopted the Rastafarian faith, which was yet another cultural and religious form of expression. These experiences exposed me to the African/ Caribbean culture, which included African and Reggae music, fashion, and food. During this period, I became aware that I was part of a marginalised Community within a British multicultural society.
Music, hair, and fashion were visual commentaries about the struggles encountered in a multicultural environment.
These are my pools of inspiration, a force and feeling reflected in the art I share with you, the viewer.
My love of life drawing, and abstraction flows from my love of dance and my appreciation of how our bodies speak and connect us. My chosen media are charcoal and pastels, which enable me to create movement and solidity.
I often use multimedia, including a combination of plaster, bandages, acrylic, news and sugar paper, and sculpting gel, to create seascapes that capture nature's moods and emotional visions embedded in my memory.
